Indy Airport to Host Holiday, Winter Events for Public
Events include music, art, and a special holiday trip
INDIANAPOLIS (Nov. 28, 2017) – The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) kicks off winter this month with a line-up of holiday and seasonal attractions featuring art exhibitions, live holiday music, and special events hosted by the airport’s airline partners.
Kicking off the festivities, departing passengers will be greeted by a specially decorated snowplow, to be unveiled on Nov. 29 near the Delta Air Lines curbside check-in. Art students from McClelland Elementary School painted the 18-foot snowplow, which will brighten the Indy airport’s snow team’s days as they battle the winter weather. The holiday snowplow will be on display through Dec. 13, unless the weather hits and the snowplow is called into action to keep the runways clear of snow.
Travelers also can view the winter art exhibitions, featuring three Hoosier artists whose work depicts the local Indianapolis landscapes, seasons, and a blend of dreams and reality. The Indy airport has partnered with the Arts Council of Indianapolis to bring public art displays to the terminal. Pieces by Douglas David and Derrick Carter are located in the Ticket Hall, while work by Benny Sanders’ is displayed in the Concourse B Exhibition Case. Artwork will be on display through March 11, 2018.
Merry music also will ring out in Civic Plaza from Dec. 8 – Dec. 24 as various local musical artists share their talents with the public and passengers. Artists will include the Circle City Chorus, Indy Klez, Basement Brass Quintet, The Village Carolers, Don Clarkson, Bryan Thompson and several area elementary and high school choirs.
“The holidays are one of the year’s busiest travel times for many people,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of Indianapolis Airport Authority. “We want to bring our passengers together as they travel to and from Indianapolis, and provide a travel experience that brightens their holidays and reminds them of what’s most important.”
On Dec. 9, American Airlines will launch its Snowball Express – a special, all-expense-paid holiday trip to Dallas-Fort Worth for children who have lost a parent while serving in the U.S. military since Sept. 11, 2001. Indianapolis is one of 11 cities from where these charter flights depart. This event allows military families from across the world to connect during the holiday season, while participating in a series of activities.
On Dec. 13, Delta Airlines will be hosting a blood drive in partnership with the American Red Cross. The event will be located in Baggage Claim from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Passengers may schedule an appointment at www.redcrossblood.org with sponsor code DeltaIND.
Throughout the holidays, passengers will be able to enjoy the decorated halls of the terminal, or snap a photo next to the –NDY sign – with the holiday tree providing a festive backdrop – as travelers take off for their holiday adventures.
