Volunteers for ambassador program at Indianapolis International sought

Program includes perks, partnerships with local colleges and civic groups

INDIANAPOLIS—When landing in an unfamiliar city, a friendly airport representative who can answer questions and help you get your bearings is a welcome sight.

Indianapolis International Airport seeks adults 18 and older with plenty of “Hoosier Hospitality” to serve as volunteer IND Ambassadors.

Airport ambassadors will help greet, assist, and direct passengers and visitors, providing general information about both the airport and the City of Indianapolis.

Anyone living in Indianapolis or surrounding areas with an interest in and enthusiasm for the airport and the community are encouraged to become team members.

The Indianapolis Airport Authority is partnering with several groups to make the opportunity worth the effort. Students in tourism, travel, and hospitality programs at IUPUI and Ivy Tech who become IND Ambassadors, for example, will receive internships.

All volunteers will receive training and uniforms. In addition, incentives and rewards are available for those who volunteer. The perks include:

  • Free year-round parking at the airport, including when off-duty

  • Discounts at participating airport restaurant and retail operations

  • Free admission to the Indiana State Museum

  • Opportunities for free passes to tour the President Benjamin Harrison Home, Morris-Butler House, the Indianapolis Museum of Art’s Tobias Theatre, James Whitcomb Riley Museum Home, and other local attractions

  • Opportunities for box seat tickets for the Indianapolis Indians (April 2010)

  • Opportunities to receive gift certificates to downtown restaurants, including the Skyline Club, Shula’s Steak House, and Santorini Greek Kitchen

  • Gift cards to Mass Ave Wine Shoppe

To qualify, applicants must be 18 years of age or older, provide continuous past job history, and pass a detailed background check.

A minimum time commitment is required for one (1) four-hour weekly shift, including weekdays and weekends. Morning and afternoon shifts are available; shifts span a 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. timeframe.

Good visual and hearing abilities are required for recognizing when people need assistance and being able to effectively communicate with them. Bi-lingual skills are strongly desired, but not mandatory.

Applications are being accepted through the Indianapolis International Airport’s Human Resource Department.

The first training session and luncheon for selected volunteers is expected to take place toward the end of September at the airport.
