Southwest’s First International Flight from Indianapolis Takes Off

Cancun today, then Austin in April and Oakland in July

INDIANAPOLIS (March 10, 2018) – Taking off just in time for last-minute, spring-break plans or for a summer getaway, Southwest Airlines’ launched its first international nonstop flight to Cancun, Mexico out of the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) today.

The airline’s first international flight from Indianapolis will depart on Saturdays from now through the summer.

“Southwest is very in-tune with where passengers want to go, and today’s inaugural flight is proof of that,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority. “Southwest is our most-traveled airline partner, and for good reason. They do their homework, and make investments aligned with what the Indianapolis market is calling for.”

Southwest accounts for 34 percent of the airport’s passenger traffic annually, offering nearly 40,000 seats each week. Hoosiers can reach 21 nonstop destinations with Southwest – the most of any airline at the Indy airport.

With its warm beaches, numerous resorts, and archaeological zones featuring ruins from the Mayan civilization, Cancun is the number one international destination out of Indianapolis.

Cancun International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean, and Southwest is the third airline – joining both Delta Air Lines and Vacation Express – to offer nonstop seasonal flights into Cancun. The airport also serves as the access point to Riviera Maya.

“Cancun is a popular vacation spot and Hoosiers can now to take that much-needed vacation on Southwest’s new weekly nonstop service on Saturdays,” said Katherine Findlay, Southwest Airlines’ vice president and executive ambassador for Indianapolis. “Our value and hospitality have made us the hometown carrier in Indianapolis and we continue to look at how we might add time-saving flights to reach the destinations that are important for our local customers.”

This year brings more flights option for Indy passengers on Southwest. On April 8, Southwest will begin seasonal, nonstop flights to Austin, Texas. On July 15, the airline launches daily, year-round service to Oakland, California.

In addition to the new nonstop service, Southwest extended or increased the number of flights for the June – August 2018 schedule to three other destinations including San Diego, California, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, Florida.
