Indy Airport Ranks No. 1 in North America for Wi-Fi

IND also ranks 10th among airports globally

INDIANAPOLIS (April 11, 2024) — The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is riding high on its Wi-Fi superiority, taking three top titles and a global honor in a recent international assessment of airports’ connectivity. The Indy airport’s Wi-Fi service was recently named the best among airports in the United States, the best among airports in North America and the 10th best Wi-Fi service among airports around the globe.

The rankings were determined by the Electronics Hub group, which is a free online resource that helps students, makers, hobbyists, and engineers build electronics projects. Electronics Hub analyzed reviews for all international airports around the world on Skytrax, specifically focusing on the Wi-Fi connectivity ratings.

Electronics Hub said Wi-Fi infrastructure at airports today has made it easier for thousands of users to stay connected as they move throughout the facility.

“Wi-Fi connectivity is a significant factor in airport customer experience, from the travel journey showing boarding passes to app-driven self-check-in, along with people striving to stay connected while traveling or to help pass the time for entertainment purposes,” said Mario Rodriguez, Indianapolis Airport Authority executive director. “IND has made providing that connectivity a priority, and it shows in how people rate Indy’s airport.”

Part of what makes Indy airport’s Wi-Fi services so superior is its “fast and free” for all, so there’s no need for airport guests to pay more for a faster connection. Nor are travelers subjected to an advertisement or required to share personal data in exchange for using the Wi-Fi. The Indy airport also has ample charging stations throughout the terminal, including charging ports under the seats at every gate.

“We think of it as a basic airport service, like water, electricity or clean bathrooms,” said Reid Goldsmith, senior director of information technology at the IAA. “It’s a service that often goes unnoticed unless it’s not working well -- quick Wi-Fi access at IND is essential to satisfy travelers who can work from anywhere and are watching streaming videos and listening to music on their electronic devices.”

Electronics Hub conducted the study to recognize airports with the best connectivity and to shed light on how important it is for travelers to be mindful of safe internet use while traveling.

The group recommends always using airport Wi-Fi connections carefully while traveling and avoiding visiting websites – such as banks — that require login information. The group also recommends using a VPN, setting up a password-protected hotspot before connecting laptops and tablets to public Wi-Fi sites, and ensuring smartphone operating systems are updated and include trusted anti-malware software.
