Indy Airport Breaks Passenger Traffic Records in First Part of 2018

Passenger traffic up 8 percent, five new flights added to nonstop destinations

INDIANAPOLIS (June 8, 2018) – Activity at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) is hopping in 2018, with first-quarter passenger data showing two record-breaking months and five new nonstop destinations served compared to the same time period last year.

“Not only was passenger traffic up 8 percent over the same time last year, but seat capacity to accommodate more travelers was up 6 percent,” said Mario Rodriguez, Indianapolis Airport Authority executive director. “It’s further testament that people realize you can get there from Indy – and that’s valuable in a dynamic way to economic growth.”

First-quarter data shows that the airport broke passenger traffic records in both January and March historically, with increases in enplanement of 7 percent and 8 percent respectively for those months over the same time last year. February enplanements were also up 9 percent over the same time in 2017.

Allegiant Air and Frontier Airlines both added more than 45 percent additional seating to the Indy market in first-quarter 2018 compared to the first quarter of 2017.

“We also found airline seat miles were up by 12 percent in early 2018, which means planes flying nonstop out of Indy are taking people to further destinations,” said Rodriguez.

Hoosiers had more options to reach key destinations in the first-quarter of 2018 with increased flights to Cancun, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Tampa. In addition, five new destinations were added with nonstop flights to Austin, Phoenix, Salt Lake City, Savannah and Seattle.

In 2017, more than 8.77 million passengers flew through the Indianapolis International Airport, setting a new historical record. This new passenger record exceeded the previous record set in 2005. Today the Indianapolis airport averages 145 daily flights to 51 nonstop destinations.
