Indianapolis Airport, Southwest Announce New Flight
Flight marks first Southwest international flight out of Indy
INDIANAPOLIS (July 27, 2017) – Southwest Airlines hosted a fanfare event at the Indianapolis International Airport (IND) today to announce their first international nonstop flight out of Indianapolis – destined for Cancun, Mexico. The inaugural flight will take place on March 10, 2018.
Southwest Airlines has made considerable investment in Indianapolis over the past few years, with more than 40,000 seats sold weekly out of Indianapolis on nearly 40 flights per day to more than 15 nonstop destinations, the most out of all IND airline partners.
Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority, said Southwest has increased its nonstop flights leaving out of Indy by almost 70 percent since 2014.
“Now they’re adding their first international flight out of Indy, which sends a clear message that Southwest has strong confidence in the Indy market for further domestic and international growth and expansion,” said Rodriguez.
Cancun is the number-one international destination out of Indy currently, with Delta Airlines and Vacation Express both offering seasonal nonstop Cancun routes. Cancun International Airport is one of the busiest airports in the Caribbean and an entry point to Riviera Maya.
Southwest’s seasonal Cancun service will depart Indianapolis on Saturdays from March 10, 2018 through summer 2018.
Earlier this year, Southwest announced a new nonstop seasonal flight out of Indianapolis to San Diego connecting Indy travelers to the West Coast. San Diego service launched in June and will run through August 2017.
Southwest credits its growth in the Indy market to customer enthusiasm.
“Our customers’ passion for Southwest keeps us going strong in Indianapolis, and our addition of nonstop service to Cancun is another example of providing the service customers are asking for,” Katherine Findlay, a Southwest Airlines vice president and executive sponsor of Indianapolis, said during a news conference at Indianapolis International Airport this morning. “The opening of our seventeenth international gateway comes just in time for spring break, giving travelers a quicker route to a much-needed vacation.”
