Allegiant Launches New Flight Today to Charleston

New seasonal flight will connect Indy to previously unserved coastal destination

INDIANAPOLIS (April 6, 2018) – The Indianapolis International Airport (IND) has summer-travel plans in view as Allegiant Air launches its first nonstop flight to Charleston, South Carolina – a previously unserved destination out of Indianapolis.

The Charleston flight departs this morning and will run seasonally from April to October with flights departing twice per week on Mondays and Fridays.

“Connecting nonstop from Indy to the historical city of Charleston opens a new chapter in the Indy airport’s history,” said Mario Rodriguez, executive director of the Indianapolis Airport Authority. “Previously Charleston has been an unserved destination. But today that all changes, as Allegiant connects Hoosier leisure travelers to a rich cultural and coastal experience.”

Charleston features a rich history and cultural blend as one of the oldest cities in the United States, and has been named one of America’s friendliest cities. The coastal destination offers travelers picturesque scenery, historic tours, museums and monuments – including the country’s only tea garden, the Charleston Tea Plantation on Wadmalaw Island, and the Ft. Sumter Museum and ferry tour to the Ft. Sumter National Monument. Noted beach destinations, such as Folly Beach and Isle of Palms, are just a short drive from the Charleston airport.

Allegiant now offers 14 nonstop destinations from Indianapolis, and recently began operations with its new $40 million plane and crew base at the Indy airport in February. The Indianapolis base is expected to significantly boost Allegiant’s economic impact in the state of Indiana. According to a recent study by Campbell-Hill Aviation, in 2016 Allegiant generated more than $118 million in economic benefit to the state, bringing more than 68,000 new visitors and supporting more than 1,000 jobs.

Allegiant currently serves 25 routes from four cities in the state of Indiana, including flights from Indianapolis, South Bend, Fort Wayne and Evansville.

“We’re thrilled to expand our service once again, at our newly-opened Indianapolis base with nonstop flights to Charleston,” said Lukas Johnson, Allegiant senior vice president of commercial. “Indianapolis has embraced Allegiant, and we’re excited to deliver on the promise of affordable, convenient service to the home of southern charm, historic Charleston.”
