Cardinal Points
Category: Permanent
A key design element is a map-like grid of downtown Indy, with Monument Circle at its center. The grid overlaps a repeated circular pattern that represents modern agricultural irrigation systems, the artists' nod to Indiana's rural foundation. Vivid flocks of soaring red cardinals glide high above the city, leaving behind a trace of themselves in oversized ruby feathers.
- Artists: Stuart Keeler and Michael Machnic, Atlanta, Georgia
- Installation: 2008
- Materials: Glass; 120 feet by 11 feet
- Location: Concourse B security area
To give the piece a handmade look, Keeler and Machnic approached Franz Mayer, a Munich-based, family-owned firm in Germany known for its highly skilled team of glass artisans, to execute the design. The sprawling composition can be seen from Concourse B's security checkpoint, an area filled with natural light.
