From life sciences and technology to agribusiness and motorsports, this is a city and state with momentum. Global companies call Indy their home with headquarters and global offices driving their workforce, such as Eli Lilly and Company, GE Aviation, Rolls-Royce, Genesys, Infosys, and Salesforce.
The Indy airport is adding to the global economic growth of Central Indiana with several key developments. Most notably:
The second largest FedEx Express hub in the world is expanding its facilities at IND, with a $1.5 billion investment. As a testament to its long-standing relationship at IND, the Indy FedEx Hub celebrated its 30th anniversary at the end of 2018 and extended its lease with the airport through 2053 with the opportunity for two ten-year option periods.
IND will also become home of a U.S. education center for Infosys, a global leader in consulting, technology, and next-generation services, which will initially redevelop 70.5 acres on the old airport terminal property, and potentially double that footprint in the future. Infosys is providing an initial investment of $35 million to create an innovative training center. Significant construction has occurred to date with an anticipated occupancy by fall 2020, ultimately creating 3,000 high-paying jobs.
Republic Airways, an Indianapolis-based regional airline, opened their U.S. based flight training academy at IND furthering Central Indiana as an aviation career development hub. LIFT Academy will help to meet the growing need for more than 637,000 commercial pilots worldwide in 2036. In addition to LIFT Academy, Vincennes University and Purdue University have a significant presence on the airport campus and deepen the commitment to aviation workforce development.
Inside the IND terminal, a Concessions Refresh initiative is underway as part of a larger Terminal Optimization program. The Concessions Refresh program currently has awarded new contracts that will bring a total of 42 new retail and food and beverage concepts, or expansions of existing spaces, to IND and its more than 9 million passengers who travel through the airport each year. These new concepts represent some of the top trending national, regional and local brands to the Indy airport. As part of this three-year phased construction project, the first round of stores opened at the end of 2019, including FAO Schwarz, Vineyard Vines, and other retail stores with nods to iconic Indy elements such as the Fountain Square Market and Pit Stop.
We continue to attract new airlines and new routes, with more than 50 nonstop flights that can connect business and leisure travelers around the world. In March 2019, Spirit Airlines became the newest airline to offers flights out of the Indy airport – which is now served by almost every major airline in the United States (all except JetBlue). At Spirit’s inaugural flight celebration at IND they announced two additional nonstop routes (which launched winter 2019), showing their confidence in the Indianapolis market.
In May 2019, the Indy airport celebrated the first anniversary of its flight from Indy to Paris, France on Delta Air Lines. The flight established Indiana’s first year-round nonstop transatlantic service to Europe. A year later, the flight is meeting expectations with more than 1,000 passengers on average flying between Indianapolis and Paris weekly. The Paris route opened up convenient travel to over 900 foreign-owned businesses that call Indiana home.
IND is home to the 2nd largest FedEx Express Hub in the world with a $1.5 billion investment to expand their footprint with construction that began in 2019. Indy is the 8th largest cargo airport in the U.S.
The IND air service package aligns with that permitted by the FAA including landing fee waivers, rent credits, and marketing support. We shine by bringing in our strategic community partners who understand the value of air service connectivity. As such, the State of Indiana has allocated $20 million to invest in growing international air service.
In addition, IND works closely with tourism groups around the city and state to ensure support of new routes. We also align with the airline’s goals and provide introductions to the appropriate community leaders and community groups as they expand their investment in Indianapolis.
The Indianapolis economy has changed significantly over the last five years as tech companies such as Salesforce and Infosys establish roots alongside legacy life sciences and advanced manufacturing industry leaders such as Eli Lilly, Rolls Royce and Cummins. Routes Americas is a terrific opportunity to showcase Indy’s new, thriving economy.
With all of this in mind, the IND air service strategy continues to focus on increased service to both domestic and international markets, including the:
- West Coast of the U.S.
- Drive markets from Indianapolis such as St. Louis, Nashville, Pittsburgh, Milwaukee, Memphis, Cleveland and more
- International markets in Canada, Mexico, Europe, and Asia
