Southwest Announces New Flight from Indy to Austin, Texas

Nonstop seasonal flight to begin April 2018

INDIANAPOLIS (Aug. 28, 2017) – Only weeks after announcing its first nonstop international flight out of the Indianapolis International Airport (IND), Southwest Airlines announced today it will be adding another nonstop flight to its Indy lineup.

Beginning April 8, 2018, Southwest will begin seasonal nonstop service to Austin, Texas – with flights departing out of Indianapolis on Sundays at 4:20 p.m. EDT.

Until recently, Austin was one of the Indy airport’s top five unserved markets. Allegiant Airlines launched its inaugural flight to Austin in May. Southwest’s new seasonal nonstop flight will expand passengers’ opportunities to connect with the Central Texas region.

In addition to offering world-class food, Austin is the home of South by Southwest (SXSW) conference highlighting the convergence of the interactive, film, and music industries. Austin also maintains the number-three spot in terms of high-tech job growth, according to CBRE Research. These facts make Central Texas attractive to businesses looking for a conference destination or needing a direct connection to Indy’s growing tech industry.

While this new Southwest addition is welcome news for travelers, the Indianapolis Airport Authority’s Executive Director Mario Rodriguez says it’s something much more for Central Indiana.

"Another nonstop flight connecting Indy to the Austin market is great news within itself, but the message it sends to Indianapolis is significant," said Rodriguez. "It's a firm statement that the Indy airport is connecting Indy-area businesses to key industries across the continent, and we continue to position our tech-driven city in the best light."

Earlier this year, Southwest announced a new nonstop seasonal flight out of Indianapolis to San Diego connecting Indy travelers to the West Coast. San Diego service launched in June and will run through the end of August.

“We’re thrilled to link Indianapolis with everything Austin has to offer with our new nonstop service,” said Katherine Findlay, Southwest Airlines vice president and executive sponsor of Indianapolis. “The flights will connect two important capital cities demonstrating what we do best, which is connecting our customers to what’s important in their lives.”

In addition to the Sunday service, Findlay reminds passengers that connecting flights to Austin are available out of Indianapolis throughout the week and year-round as well.
