Airport Police Department

The Indianapolis Airport Authority Police Department (APD) was founded in 1971. The APD ensures the safety and security of the Indianapolis International Airport and its associated reliever airports in Marion, Hamilton, Hendricks and Morgan counties.

Our mission is to protect the airport community through prevention, partnership and professional service. That commitment and dedication extends to not only our airport tenants and employees, but to the millions of visitors and passengers who pass through the airport each year. We are devoted to maintaining the best airport police department in the country.

CALEA Certification

The Commission for Accreditation of Law Enforcement Agencies (CALEA) Accreditation Program is today's leading pathway by which law enforcement agencies can objectively validate their commitment to excellence and service. Accreditation requirements are based on the latest law enforcement methodologies and are recognized globally by authorities as standards of excellence in the law enforcement field.

APD has achieved its first reaccreditation (second award) by showing compliance with 189 of CALEA’s applicable standards, including participation in an on-site assessment to verify that APD meets professional standards. Out of approximately 376 airports that have regularly scheduled airline services, only 10 Airport Authority Police Departments are accredited. Indiana has 482 law enforcement agencies and only 17 are currently accredited through CALEA.

Anyone wishing to provide comments regarding our agency's compliance with CALEA standards, engagement in the service community, delivery of public safety services, and overall candidacy for accredited status, may provide comments to CALEA through the following Public Comment Portal:

These comments can be in the form of commendations or concerns. The overall intent of the accreditation process is to provide our agency with information to support continuous improvement, as well as foster the pursuit of professional excellence.

IMPORTANT: CALEA is not an investigatory body and subsequently the public portal should not be used to submit information for such purposes. Additionally, there will be no response other than acknowledgment of submissions; however, the information will be considered in context to its relevancy to compliance with standards and the tenets of CALEA® Accreditation.
